Sony CEO says PS3 failed to meet expectations

Category: PlayStation 3, Posted: 12/05/2007 at 12:11PM CST by Demetri Kouvalis, Features Editor

PS3 console/controllerWith the Playstation 3 being out for a little more than a year, Sony evaluated it's sales and in the end were displeased.

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton has admitted that the PlayStation 3 has failed to meet the firm's high hopes during its first year on sale.Speaking to MSNBC, Tretton said:

"I think the PS3's first year fell short of what we'd ideally like. But if you put it into perspective, we're not taking the safe route. We didn't take the PS2 and add a few bells and whistles to it. What we're trying to do here is refocus the game industry towards high-definition gaming, a real state-of-the-art, future-proof machine for the next decade.

"The beauty of this business is that it isn't all about one day, it isn't all about one title, or one month. I think there's a tremendous amount of software for the holiday season - 160 games coming out on PS3 alone for this holiday, on top of the 200 games that have already been out there, so there's more than enough great software for consumers to sink their teeth in for the holidays.

"We've got 19 exclusives, and again, I think that's something that's a pretty amazing feat in the first year of a platform's lifecycle. And they're not just games that are exclusive for the sake of exclusivity, they're games that are built and differentiated for the PS3 and just couldn't be done on any other platform."

Let's all make a quick checklist of what Mr. Tretton just described to us.

  • PS3 fell short of its expectations. We gamers sensed this from the beginning.

  • The PS3 is pumping out enough games this holiday season for everyone to be happy.

  • 19 games exclusively on the PS3. Exclusivity is a major topic of conversation these days, with many people thinking it will go the way of the dinosaur. However the PS3 is making sure that some of the exclusive games just couldn't be made on any other platform (which could be debated).

Even though the PS3 didn't live up quite as high as Sony hoped it would, it's definitely picking up some steam. So what do you think Noders, should we forgive PS3 for it's performance last year and look towards the future?

I look forward to a second price-drop. Then it may actually fit my budget. Until then, I'll sit comfortably on the fence and not worry about it at all.

Not unexpected at all. However it's not a bad console. I think we'll need to give it time. And a price drop, like rtanger said :)

This is what they did wrong, the lack of good games just fueled the fire.

It took them a year to get their act together, but with the price drops and good games finally coming out, these guys are finally making some progress. Now, if only Sony can stop being so arrogant, they just might pull this one off.

I also agree with Rtanger, i am not going to do anything, except sit on the fence, oh, and play my wii, of course....

I can't wait till march when I'll have the money to get one, they are going to cost next to nothing compared to the current price :D

I'm getting one around Christmas, either before or after depending on sales prices.

Picked up a 60GB when I found out they were phasing out the hardware based PS2 BC. I never owned a PS2, so there are dozens of games I want to play, mostly survival horror stuff, of which there is a mountain on the PS2. I picked up Siren and have been playing it, awesome game. Also want to play through the Rachet and Clank and Jak & Daxter titles, and there are some other games I've seen over the years that made me think "Maybe I should get a PS2..."
Now I don't have, I just have to track down all those games and play them on my PS3.

The critical things for the ps3 are (as everyone always says) price and lack of games BUT I think the lack of really killer exclusive games is the deal breaker. I have a lot of friends who have considered buying ps3s an are willing to shell out the cash but when they look at whats available their interest dies. Only a few really good games and most of those are on the 360 as well. Add to that the fact ps3 ports of games are often viewed as a secondary priority so end up being poorly optimized and buggier and you are kinda screwed. It's a somewhat self fulfilling prophecy ...fewer ps3s out means lower sales so why bother? Since the port isn't as good it won't have good sales regardless so it's automatically true. PC ports often have a similar problem. Hell most of the people I know who DO have ps3s use them mostly for ps2 games and blu-ray video.

Until sony gets some badass exclusives out there they don't have much hope of even breaking even.

I really like my PS3. Almost as much as the 360. Like Krakn said, it's great for playing PS2 games too. Obviously I had a PS2, but now that I have a PS3 I'm free to have that in my bedroom, at my girlfriend's apartment so she can play games when she gets bored, etc. And in the last three months or so, two of my top games of the year came out on PS3. (Uncharted and R&C if you couldnt' tell by the reviews linked above.)

I would get one if i had a Million dollars to spend on it. Price drops will be the key to its success.

I personally would prefer the PS3 to the 360. Yes the 360 has a lot of games. But compared with the PS3 the 360 lacks the processing power and the HD capabilities that the PS3 comes with stock. No buying another $150 HD DVD player (which I think will die as well). My friend has gone through 3 different Blu-ray players before he got his PS3, and all of them were more expensive and took longer to load the movie, as well as having some rendering issues that the PS3 does not have. The 360 is showing its age right about now compared to the PS3. But I don't think the faults of the 360 are enough to make the PS3 the "standard". as popecodex said, Sony needs some PS3 that are large enough to steal the thunder from games like Halo and Mass Effect. When FFXIII hits we'll see the tides turning for Sony.

I think Sony should be pushing the PS3 hard as a game system/BD player. The local Target has been selling a boatload of the $399.99 Sony BD standalone players, one has to wonder how many of those people would have bought a PS3 instead if they had known it was a BD player and game system.
I was at Target Monday, and saw a lady with 2 of the Sony BD players in her cart. I asked her why she wasn't just buying 2 PS3s instead. She just kind of stared at me and so I mentioned that the PS3 has a top notch BD player built into it for the same price as well as a game console and web browser. She was in awe by this revelation, went back and switched the players out for 2 PS3s.
She didn't have a clue.
