Activision acquires PGR/Geometry Wars developer

Category: Industry, Posted: 09/26/2007 at 12:03PM CDT by Billy Wang, Previews Editor

pgr4shotIn a recent post, Project Gotham Racing and Geometry Wars developer Bizarre Creations announced they've been acquired by publisher Activision.

All speculation aside, the UK developer assures that the acquisition was made to, "allow us to not only stay as secure and profitable as we already are as a company, but also to continue to create kickass games in exactly the same way as we're doing now."

Also Bizarre mentioned they'll remain as its own independent entity and all its current development teams will remain separate.

In addition, Bizarre hinted at its next game projects. They've finished Project Gotham Racing 4 and The Club (which was delayed till 2008), therefore these two development teams will go on to work on Activision-related projects: one is a racing game while the other is a "character game". Unfortunately, Bizarre doesn't own the game rights to either PGR or The Club (Microsoft and SEGA respectively) therefore, it's uncertain if Bizarre will return to develop future games in those series.

Activision is certainly on a roll by taking over the coveted title of the #1 video game publisher in the U.S. this year. In their continued quest to dominate the game industry, the publisher bought out Guitar Hero publisher RedOctane in addition to acquiring the game rights to James Bond from EA.

Things are looking up for Activision.
