OXM rumors: GoW DLC, Deus Ex 3 and more Thief?

Category: Industry, Posted: 08/18/2007 at 03:57PM CDT by Billy Wang, Previews Editor

deus ex logoIn the latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine (OXM #75), their hamster-running Rumor Mole wheel reported a few, well, rumors, in the gaming industry. In short, they reported on Gears of War DLC, Deus Ex 3 and a possible Thief-franchise resurrection.

First, OXM mumbled about the ongoing, "he said, she said!" deal by saying that the extra nifty bonus content that'll be featured in the PC port of Gears of War won't eventually become DLC for the Xbox 360. Yeah, we heard this before, but also heard the opposite, so we'll see. But the magazine hinted that the extra content may be in Gears of War 2.

Back in mid-May, we reported that Eidos Interactive is currently interested in developing Deus Ex 3. Now upon hearing that, my mind almost exploded. While I still enjoyed Deus Ex: Invisible War (despite its flaws), Deus Ex will have a permanent spot on my "awesome for life" shelf. Apparently Eidos is checking the landscape to see how the consumers respond to BioShock first (why?) to pursue Deus Ex 3.

Currently, BioShock is generating a lot of critical buzz (our review will be up soon) and since 2K Games is completely going ape over marketing the game, I wouldn't be surprised if BioShock does well commercially. When Eidos signed up with Steam back in late March, that should have added some new found love back into the Deus Ex series.

Lastly, Bethesda Softworks has its hands-full with Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls V and various Star Trek-related games. Apparently the word is that Bethesda is interested in scooping up another in-limbo franchise and that's Thief. With ION Storm Austin now dead (and I'm assuming Eidos is holding onto the rights), maybe Eidos is planning a second-wave resurgence with both Deus Ex 3 and another Thief game. But if Bethesda can get their hands on Thief, I would be pretty happy if they can adapt some of the gameplay concepts taken from the Dark Brotherhood-line of quests in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Those were some good (well, bad) killings served.

Of course, these are all just rumors, so put away your mace if they don't come true.

Rumors are just lies that have a hint of evidence behind them.

That's deep, man.

Considering Bethesda employs Emil Pagiarulo, Thief wouldn't be the most illogical franchise for them to handle. I think they might actually be able to handle it well.
After Deus Ex 2, I think we don't really need a Deus Ex 3. It's a franchise that might well best be served by just letting it die.

a new Deus would be awesome! also, what's this about an elder scrolls 5?
I literally just finished the Dark brotherhood quests in 4 today, and they were the best thing ever.

Just how reliable is this? I know it's just a rumor, but Deus Ex 3 IS being seriously considered for a revival, so if that can make it in there, I don't see why valid news about another Thief would be a fib. Anyone know? Anyone in Maryland so we can get together and kidnap Todd and Emil and force the beans out of them?
