In this week’s segment, we have what I like to call the triumvirate of new game announcements: a new expansion pack, a new sequel and a remake.
Hot off its own success, Supreme Commander will be getting its first expansion pack, classic FPS series Soldier of Fortune will be getting a sequel (with a catch though) and the world’s first MMO space combat game will be remade to suit today’s standards.
First, THQ and Gas Powered Games announced Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance this past week. The expansion will continue the story in the original game and will be a stand-alone title along with offering compatibility with its sister game.
Among other things, the expansion will offer a new single player campaign, a new faction, more than a hundred new units, new strategic options (navies, orbital weaponry and counter intelligence tech) and new multiplayer features. The expansion will be out in November.
A new Soldier of Fortune game, how sweet is that? But unfortunately, there’s a catch. Fabled developer Raven Software will not return to develop the sequel and Activision is handling the game as a budget title.
The game’s revelation originally appeared on EBGames and Kenn Hoekstra (formerly of Raven and currently still owns the SoF series) confirmed the news. Apparently the word is that developer Cauldron (who developed the awesome 2003 sci-fi FPS Chaser) is handling the game’s development. There’s no word on a release date.
Lastly, NetDevil announced they’ll be remaking their first online game, Jumpgate. Originally released in 2001, the game was the world’s first online space combat title. The remake, dubbed Jumpgate Evolution, will get a graphics update, new AI, plenty of new missions, an engrossing economy system and a new PvP system. The game’s website is currently taking beta sign ups too. There’s no word on a release date.
