New firmware version 1.7 update for PS3

Sony has released the latest firmware update for the PS3 — version 1.70. The update will address several issues with the PS3 such as making downloadable PS1 games playable on the PlayStation 3 and allowing more peripherals to work on the machine such as the DualShock PS2 controllers — with their rumble feature enabled (via a cable adapter).

Although the PS1 games will be playable on the console, downloaded titles will have to be specially "unlocked" in order for them to work on the PS3. Any owners who previously downloaded games from Sony’s site for their PSP machines will have to get new copies.

Version 1.70 will now allow for the transfer of PS1 saved game files from the PSP to the PS3 so that original PlayStation 1 games can be easily played and continued on either platform. Now you can play those long Final Fantasy games at home, while you’re at work, or at school.

Oddly enough, although the firmware is available for download immediately from the PlayStation.com site, no details have been posted about the new firmware update or its availability.
