GamerNode was able to join in on a conference call with Corey Maggette of the Clippers and Derek Fisher of the Lakers. They’ll both be at the E for All conference on October 19th, a leading consumer gaming event where new games will be showcased and presented to the public and press.
Both athletes are accomplished basketball players, but they are also enthusiastic gamers as well–as can be seen from their answers to our questions.
GN: You guys have professed to be gamers for a long time. How did it feel when you first saw yourselves in a video game? What sorts of things were going through your mind…?
Corey Maggette: For me personally, it was an amazing feeling. It was the sort of feeling like when I was first drafted. You look at yourself and say, "I made it. I made it onto a video game." When you go back to your home town, people tell you that they played you in the game. It’s one of the greatest feelings that you can have. They tell me, "Hey, I scored [a lot] of points with you in the game. It’s a great honor.
Derek Fisher: I agree with Corey, it’s a great feeling. The first time you see or experience it…it’s weird but also a great honor. It’s like another right of passage that let’s you know that you’ve finally made it…you get drafted to play on a team, but to become part of a video game production and design is another confirmation or affirmation that you’ve made it to the highest level. It’s a really cool feeling.
Derek was pretty excited and said in a press interview, "Getting to compete against Corey …is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Playing video games has always been a cool way for me to hone my competitive skills off the court. I have fun when I play, but I still play to win. I can’t wait to test my skills out against these guys!"
Mary Dolaher, CEO of IDG World Expo said, "Corey Maggette and Derek Fisher’s appearance is a perfect example of what E for All is all about – a unique, fun experience for anyone who loves video games, from professional athletes and world-class gamers, to parents, kids, students, industry professionals and everyone in-between.
"We can’t wait to see Corey and Derek in action and look forward to welcoming them to the country’s premiere video game event."
Entertainment for All, (E for All) is scheduled for October 18-21, 2007, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Corey and Derek will be there at 3pm on Friday, October 19 and will go head-to-head in a basketball video game throw-down. Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel will also be there to challenge the two NBA pros in some virtual basketball.
