Namco-Bandai reviving Splatterhouse from the dead

The original Splatterhouse was released in 1990 for the TurboGrafx-16. While critically praised back in its era, most agree that time has not been kind to Splatterhouse.

Despite that however, Namco-Bandai decided to bring the Splatterhouse franchise into the 21st century as they announced today that a brand-new entry in the franchise will find its home on the Xbox 360 and PS3 sometime next year.

Unlike its predecessors, this new game will not be just another beat-’em-up. Namco has promised an exciting combat system that will give players a variety of different ways to destroy the opposition. Weapons include items you may find lying on the floor and you also have the ability to tear off the limbs of your enemies and use them as tools of destruction. Players can also resurrect defeated monsters to offer assistance as well as solve various puzzles.

The Splatterhouse franchise is famous for its gore and Namco has taken the necesarry precautions to make sure all the blood and guts remain intact. The developers say that if the monsters overwhelm Rick (the character players control), they will dismember him. "They will begin to dismember him, savagely tearing away limbs and ripping at his flesh to expose his internal organs. To survive, Rick must call upon the power of the Terror Mask to regenerate his mutilated body, allowing players to watch in gory detail as bones, veins, muscles, and skin return to his body in real time."

Now how’s that for gruesome?
