Swedish Developer and former EA employee Ben Cousins has stated that a sequel to Mirror’s Edge is more than just a rumor.
Speaking through his Twitter account, Cousins claimed it is “general knowledge” over at the Swedish Stockholm development scene that a sequel to the acclaimed 2008 free-runner is in development by DICE. The tweet was in response to a report in which EA Games vice-president Patrick Soderlund stated non-Battlefield projects were in development at DICE:
“The DICE guys are roughly 300 people in the Stockholm studio; not all of them are working on Battlefield things, and that’s intentional, because we don’t want to become a Battlefield factory…The minute we start saying ‘you’re going to make a Battlefield game for the rest of your life’, they’re going to go some place else.”
Soderlund also emphasized this need for DICE to develop games other than the Battlefield franchise.
“For them to make great Battlefield games there need to be other things for them to do as well,” he said. “That’s why we have people who move around quite a bit. And then obviously we have a boatload of people that just want to make Battlefield because they love it.”
The original Mirror’s Edge received a mixed critical reception. While it was praised for its uniqueness, it was also criticized for its short length and lack of exploration: while its use of animated cut-scenes divided opinion in reviews.
