The decision Microsoft made of releasing the Xbox 360 a year before its competition is still evident even today. In a recent survey conducted by the MCV (Market for home Computing and Video games), Microsoft comes out on top according to consumer votes.
The anticipated and well received release of Halo 3 was one of the top reasons voters chose the Xbox 360 over the Wii and PS3.
Microsoft was on top for "highlight of the year" poll, while also winning "best attitude and quality to retail" and "best overall company." The survey also considered the Xbox 360 most likely to win the next-gen console battle.
Nintendo is also attracting a great deal of commendation from video game stores all across the country. It finished just behind Microsoft in a number of important categories.
"The success of Wii finished just behind the release of Halo 3 as the highlight of the year with 30 per cent of the vote, while retailers considered Nintendo the second best overall company with 23 per cent. Nintendo won’t be overly enamoured with the category it did top, winning 57 per cent of the vote for the ‘biggest disappointment of the year’ for lack of Wii stock."
83% of the voters had an optimistic view for the year 2008, and another 73% predicted better sales this Christmas than last.
Congratulations to both Microsoft and Nintendo for a spectacular year. With the somewhat unexpected surge of recent PS3 sales, Sony might top some of the surveys for next year if it continues its new trend.
