Microsoft’s current project intended to secure another twenty years of dominance in the home computer market, the tabletop PC, is now set for release this Spring.
The product was originally going to begin with a limited release at the end of 2007. A very select group of buyers would receive units, namely hotels, casinos, and some retail stores. Even then, the products would not be available for purchase, but rather as displays to make passersby awe at the current state of technology.
Dubbed Surface, Microsoft’s new initiative is still a long way off. MS warns that this product could be as long as five years away from being on sale en masse.
Perhaps MS will make great bounds in terms of usability with their new PC, but I can’t help but feel like this thing is at best a toy. I simply find it hard to imagine someone hovering over the tabletop computer for long periods of time, like an old school Ms. Pacman table.
Sure it looks kind of interesting, but will anybody find this to be worth the thousands of dollars it’ll be retailing for when it releases just so they can make paint-free finger paintings?
