Killzone 2 on the PS3. There was no other choice…

PS3 octogonThe sequel to Sony’s Killzone game is an exclusive to the PlayStation 3. But according to the developer, Guerrilla Games, it turns out that the PS3 is the only next gen console capable of handling the immense amount of high detail and data included in Killzone 2.

There was no way that the sequel could have been developed on standard DVD discs.

According to Hermen Hulst, the managing director at Guerrilla, "Xbox 360 doesn’t have Blu-ray. PlayStation 3 does. [Just a single level] is 2GB. We really need Blu-ray to make the game. I don’t know how you could fit it on Xbox 360 without taking some shortcuts. Blu-ray isn’t important for watching movies; we need it for making games." His remarks were made to Official PlayStation Magazine.

Hulst also said that it wasn’t just the capacity of the Blu-ray disc that was the final factor in selecting the PS3 to carry on the Killzone franchise; it was also due to the PS3’s power.

He elaborated, "I firmly believe that what we’ve shown we can get out of [PS3] would be difficult, if not impossible, to deliver on a competing machine."

Hype or fact? Conflicting reports have dogged the PS3 since its release last November. Some game developers claim that the power and graphics of the Xbox 360 compare favorably or even excel that of the PlayStation 3. So if the PS3 is just beginning to show what it can do, loyal fans of this machine may have a lot to look forward to.

The debate will go on. As for the PS3’s potential in being a heavyweight in the next gen console ring; a firm decision has not been reached yet by the judges.
