When one thinks of a man’s man, they think of James Bond. But behind all the shoot-outs, seducing females and gadget usage, British actor Daniel Craig, who signed a $60 million deal to play Bond in the next three movies, admitted that, much like us, he’s a hardcore gamer.
Craig said, "I play games. Hands up. I’m quite into ones that have a big fat story line… I can switch the phone off and not see anybody for a couple of hours. That is blissful. It’s just as well I don’t have much spare time or I would probably fritter it away playing computer games."
As for some favorites, Craig is a fan of both Halo and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Both games, one could argue, have fat storylines.
"Halo is good because it’s shooting aliens…Those ultra-violent ones I can play for half-an-hour and then I feel dirty. Vice City, for example – I think, ‘Oh yes, all right, I’ve stolen 18 cars, I’ve had enough now.’"
Much like gamers with significant others, we scramble to hide games during their company. For Craig, it’s no different with his current girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell.
"I have to pick my time well. If my girlfriend sees the box then it’s all over. If I get some free time, when she goes away for the weekend, I’ll go and play some games."
While Craig is definitely a gaming fan, he wasn’t too keen on actually participating in a Bond game. "When I started signing contracts for Bond I said, ‘I’m not doing the computer game’ and they said, ‘Tough, you are’. I said to the people making the Bond game, ‘You’ve got to make this good because there is so much rubbish out there.’"
Activision picked up the video game license for James Bond in 2006, (previously held by EA).
The first James Bond game from Activision is set for release in May 2008 from Treyarch, Beenox and Vicarious Visions. Considering all three developers have had plenty of success with creating good games, I have high hopes that it won’t be ‘rubbish."
