In what may be one of the most bizarre stories to hit the gaming world in 2008, Kotaku reports that anti-game lawyer, Jack Thompson, has stated that the controversy surrounding the game, Mass Effect, is all bogus. In effect he is saying that Mass Effect is ok with him.
Alright, now that you’ve picked yourself off the floor, the comments were made during an email conversation between Kotaku’s Brian Cresente and The Crusader Against Video Games. (In Thompson’s comments, he mistakenly refers to Cooper Lawrence as a man.)
Lawrence set off the controversy by slamming Mass Effect as a game containing pornographic scenes. She made these statements during an interview with Fox News, when in fact; she never played the game and based her opinions on what others told her. She has since apologized and said "I recognize that I misspoke." Well, that’s putting it mildly, to say the least.
Here is a transcript of the email between Cresente and Thompson about Mass Effect.
Cresente: I like your new glasses
Thompson: Wow, as usual you’re grasping the real news here.
Cresente: I’m surprised you haven’t been looking Into Mass Effect.
Thompson: Why would you be surprised. I don’t see any problem with it. The guy who shot his mouth off about it had no idea what the hell he was talking about.
Cresente: You mean you’re ok with Mass Effect?
Thompson: Of course. This contrived controversy is actually ridiculous. Report that, why don’t you?
Well, what can we say? It’s evident that the stars have fallen from the sky, a lead balloon floats, there really is a Santa Claus and Jack Thompson thinks Mass Effect is ok. If this sort of stuff continues maybe Jack will start liking Grand Theft Auto IV when it comes out.
Well, maybe not.
