If I may modify an old saying, there are THREE things in life that can’t be avoided–death, taxes, and loading screens.
Loading screens are as common as the noonday sun. But according to Ted Price, boss over at Insomniac, he says that we won’t see a single loading screen in Resistance 2 during the entire game.
"We do have streaming of textures and other assets now. Not only does this improve the overall look but it cuts down on load times. In fact, you shouldn’t notice any loading screens in R2. We’ve also added a lot more tech-wise – detail maps, new lighting system, new effects system, better normal mapping, better specular response, redone shaders and lots of behind-the-scenes stuff that makes the game really stand out aesthetically."
But just in case Insomniac’s plan doesn’t work, Price added, "You’ll see bigger ‘levels’ or ‘chapters’ this time around. And hopefully you won’t see any loading screens. At least that’s the plan!"
In GTA IV, loading screens between game segments were much less noticeable than the Xbox 360 version. This was attributed to the five-minute preload of data on the PS3’s HDD.
But whichever route Insomniac takes to eliminate loading screens, it will be a welcome bonus for Resistance fans.
