id Software digs deeper into mobile gaming

mobilegamingWhile id Software is well-known for developing many PC games throughout its history, there’s one genre of games they’ve been focusing on lately that may catch you off-guard: mobile gaming.

Today, id Software announced the formation of id Mobile, a new development studio solely dedicated to creating mobile games. As of now, they have plans to bring Quake and Wolfenstein over to mobile phones, along with a sequel to Doom RPG, which sold over 1 million copies two years ago.

Katherine Anna Kang, former director of business development at id and wife of id co-founder John Carmack, will serve as id Mobile’s president. Kang was also founder of Fountainhead Entertainment, who co-developed Doom RPG and Orcs & Elves with id Software.

Carmack said, "The whole reason we are in the mobile arena now is I was just really appalled at how bad (cellphone games) were. We’re already making profit on 2 million units of games (sold), but we are kind of holding out this hope there might be a breakout moment when the industry gets five to 10 times larger."
