All around the gaming press today you’re going to see giant headlines that say, "MICROSOFT NOT MAKING CRACKDOWN 2!!!" or perhaps, "NO CRACKDOWN 2 EVAR!!!" or something of that ilk.
While the truth probably isn’t far off, the fact is, Microsoft would be insane not to develop a sequel to what ended up as being a very well received original series.
The quote floating around that these rumors are being based off comes from the mouth of Real Time Worlds Producers Phil Wilson, ""Microsoft were a little late in stepping up to the plate to ask for Crackdown 2, and by then we had already started working on bigger, better things."
While this does indicate that Real Time Worlds will not be working on Crackdown 2, this in no way confirms that the title won’t be made. In most cases the publisher retains the rights to an IP, and the right to get other developers to make sequels.
We are awaiting confirmation from Microsoft and Real Time Worlds on the question of who exactly owns the right to the Crackdown name. As soon as we get a definitive word from either source we’ll update and let you all know where this stands.
Crackdown went on to sell 1.5 million copies world wide. In an age where everything that sells more than a quarter million gets a sequel you can be sure that, if it’s possible, Crackdown will get one.
