Estimates are coming in that 1.8 million copies of Halo 3 were sold during the first 8 hours of the game’s release. In addition to the staggering 1.5 million pre-orders for the game, an additional 300,000 copies were sold in retail stores, thus bumping up the sales number to around 1.8 million.
Continuing a trend that’ll surely break many bar graphs and wallets, other estimates indicate that within the first 24 hours, Halo 3 will sell around 2.45 million copies. Now, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that 2.45 million copies within the first day of release is a heck of a lot of sales. And when big sales are made like this, big money is made.
While I personally don’t like calculating a set retail price times the number of copies sold automatically equals the earned cash-flow for Microsoft, just for the sake of argument, if the average price of all the various Halo 3 editions are factored in at $78, Microsoft is probably going to make around $140 million during the first 8 hours and an additional $191 million by the end of the day.
So, yes, let that rattle in your brain and you’ll know that Halo 3 is definitely a monster hit.
