GameTap, Turner Broadcasting System,s broadband entertainment network, is adding social networking and multiplayer support to its online gaming harem. Announced today, the new features will include head-to-head game play and Instant Messaging. Dozens of the games in GameTap,s roster now have multiplayer capabilities, and more will be updated in its 580 game line-up.
GameTap,s General Manager Stuart Snyder said, “GameTap is leading the industry in digital distribution with the most games and video on demand at an affordable price. Beyond the largest games catalogue and exclusive new content, we,re looking for our community to help drive what,s next.”
In the past several years, more and more developers are realizing the importance, entertainment value, and sheer potential in the multiplayer portion of any game, and GameTap understands the importance of an online community. “The only thing more fun than playing video games, is talking trash while you,re playing,” said vice president of marketing David Reid. “Whether you,re cheering a team-mate on or ribbing an opponent, gaming and chatting are a natural pair.”
Users can now communicate with other gamers within the GameTap application using the GameTap branded IM feature. There are roughly a dozen new chat lobbies that focus on the new online Challenge Games (Burger Time, Galaga, Zaxxon, Pac-Man, King of Monsters, 1941: Counter Attack, and Bust-A-Move) where players can chat and challenge each other. Users can also use their existing AIM accounts to access the AIM network within the GameTap application, using their original screenname.
GameTap offers a monthly subscription with two weeks free; unfortunately, it appears that only users located within the United States can participate.
