The NPD Group released its sales figures for August and console game software, hardware and accessories reached $993 million in revenue. This is up from July’s revenue haul of $925.5 million and is up 46% during the same period last year. Heck of a catch, I’d say.
Analysts say that several factors led to the nearly $1 billion revenue earnings. First, Microsoft implemented the Xbox 360 price drop in August, which resulted in Xbox 360 sales shooting up by 100,000 units from July to August.
As for the PlayStation 3, sales have been slowly declining since Sony implemented the PS3 price drop back in July. During July, PS3 sales skyrocketed to 159,000 units, but slowly declined to 130,600 units in August. Lastly for the Wii, it sold 403,600 units in August, which is surprising since Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was released in August and should have boosted the Wii sales.
August’s game sales reached $488 million, thanks to EA’s Madden franchise. Listed below are August’s top-selling games.
