Yesterday, Sony revealed that on February 20, gamers would get to “see the future” of the PlayStation brand. The announcement has since fueled speculation that this would mean the reveal of the PlayStation 4, officially known as Orbis, but that speculation is now starting to gain some serious traction.
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, its sources have confirmed that this date will see the unveiling of the PlayStation 3’s successor. The paper’s sources also claimed that the new console will release this year. It will focus more on social aspects and user interaction with these features as opposed to pure hardware, a polar opposite of Sony’s initial approach with the PS3.
Meanwhile, a report by Edge states that its sources have told the site that the console’s controller will feature a “Share” button. Apparently, the console will record the last 15 minutes of play and hitting the new button will allow players to quickly edit and share both video and screenshots.
Polygon has also learned that one of Sony’s biggest gaming rivals, Microsoft, is planning its own reveal event for its new console this spring. This would mean that Sony would get the jump on Microsoft in ushering in their respective company’s next-generation hardware, which is contrary to what Sony CEO Kaz Hirai recently proclaimed.
Let us know what you want to see with Orbis and whether or not you believe February 20 will indeed see the console’s reveal in the comments below.
I think it’s sort of exciting, but I could probably live with the current consoles for another 3 years.
