European Commission looks into unfair gaming costs

playstation3Angry about UK gaming prices? Don’t want to pay more money for games and consoles than the folks across the pond?

Never fear because The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, has plans to begin investigating major gaming companies (such as Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft) about their prices for game consoles and video games throughout Europe, the U.S. and Japan.

For comparison’s sake, the UK launch price for the 60GB PS3 was £425, which was a little more than the launch price of the same console for the U.S. and Japan and a lot more than the France launch price of £399 or Australia launch price of £397.

The Daily Mail newspaper had some comments from Commission officials about the investigation too, which appears to cover a lot of ground. "We are screening the markets, taking into account levels of complaints about prices, pricing patterns across Europe and customer satisfaction. We are looking for the kind of retail patterns which raise questions."
