Korean publisher Webzen has officially confirmed its decision to halt the production of Endless Saga, a dual platform MMO project that was originally being developed for release on the PC and PS3. "We have recently decided to cancel the Endless Saga project. Endless Saga was one of our ambitious development projects to enter into the next generation console market. However, after some rigorous development effort, we found the gameplay of Endless Saga to be short of innovation and creativity we seek to achieve in online gaming space."
This news will likely come as a major disappointment to many potential PS3 owners, who now will have to endure the sting of losing a high profile game for their console. However, this "sudden" change of heart isn’t surprising. Originally announced as one of the first titles to license the Unreal 3 Engine, Endless Saga went practically unseen throughout its entire phase of production with almost no mention at E3 2006, in contrast to the rest of the company’s more prominent games, Huxley and Soul of the Ultimate Nation, for example.
Rest assured, however, a rep has stated that their aspirations to create something for the PS3 have not waned in the least bit. "We still have a plan to enter into PS3 market and I’ll let you know when we’re prepared to bring something more valuable and fun to PS3 gamers."
