Variety has reported that John Gatins (the psychotic robot manager, Kingpin, in Dreamworks’ Real Steel) has been chosen to create a pitch for a Need for Speed movie adaptation. The pitch will be written by George Gatins, producer of She’s Out of My League.
I’m sure that EA is looking to piggyback on the success of the Fast and the Furious franchise. Paramount is said to be the lead car in the chase for rights to the game. The question now isn’t if the movie will be made but which of the 18 games will provide source material for the movie.
While The Run had one of the deepest stories to date, there still wasn’t much to grasp onto. If the Gatins can come up with an original story and tack the Need For Speed name onto it, this has the possibility of being a summer blockbuster in 2013. It also has the chance of turning into another Battleship fiasco, which releases later this year but is sure to underwhelm.
Personally, I think Most Wanted would be a great backdrop for a pretty entertaining movie, but Carbon had some great crew elements that would add an Ocean’s 11 feel to the film. Needless to say, car movies are generally pretty badass, with highlights like Gone in 60 Seconds, The Fast and Furious, and The Italian Job making this possible adaptation something to keep your ears perked up for.
