Last night at a Square Enix reveal event, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii made a big announcement regarding the upcoming entry in the series: it will be an online RPG.
Horrii also introduced the first trailer for Dragon Quest X, which showed off the game’s various classes such as ogres and dwarves. The popular slime monsters also made an appearance, and a brief scene of a party running across the world map was included in the trailer as well.
Level-5 developed the last two entries in the series, but its name didn’t come up at the event. At this point it wouldn’t be surprising if Square Enix handled both publishing and developing duties.
A discovery made on a brief news post also hints at the possibility of a "usage fee." Considering Dragon Quest X is now an online RPG, that makes sense.
The game is also being developed for Wii U, which will include cross-platform play with the Wii version. That platform’s release date is listed as TBA, but Dragon Quest X is expected to come out for the Wii in Japan at some point in 2012.
