Gamers were surprised when Chris Metzen of Blizzard showed up on stage during Sony’s PlayStation 4 reveal yesterday. The Senior VP of Story/Franchise Development went on to announce that Diablo III will be coming out for both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
Prior to the announcement, Metzen explained his company’s passion about console gaming despite the many PC releases from Blizzard over the years. He mentioned its roots with console titles like The Lost Vikings and Rock n’ Roll Racing, and fans of Diablo will remember that the original game also came out on the PlayStation.
The PS3/PS4 versions of Diablo III will include new optimized control schemes, a redesigned user interface, and direct control over the player’s avatar. A four-player local co-op mode was also emphasized, with Metzen joking that Blizzard’s vision is “one couch to rule them all.” In addition, Blizzard has opted to use a full screen display for the local multiplayer mode.
Metzen closed the presentation with news that the PS3 version of Diablo III will be playable at this year’s PAX East. The event takes place March 22-24, so look out for more information on the upcoming release then.
