Adding to the ongoing mess that is the debate of the "decline" of PC gaming are some comments from Crytek president Cevat Yerli. Crytek is well-known for its two PC-only FPS: Far Cry (2004) and Crysis (2007), along with pushing PC hardware to its limits.
When asked about the current state of the PC gaming industry, Yerli made some comments that may irk the PC gaming crowd, especially with a prominent stance of saying console shooters trail behind PC shooters — assuming that Crytek remains a FPS developer.
"…We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable. I believe that’s the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy. To the degree PC Gamers that pirate games inherently destroy the platform. Similar games on consoles sell factors of 4-5 more. It was a big lesson for us and I believe we won’t have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore."
Hearing about this, I wasn’t surprised. Crytek already has a console version of the CryEngine 2 running and with past rumors of Crysis heading to consoles in one form or another, it was only natural for the company to branch to consoles. You pretty much have to in order to stay alive too.
