When Call of Duty: Black Ops was released late last year, it seemed obvious that the game would do well in the US. But in only five short months it is already reaching the top of the all-time charts.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier claims that Black Ops has surpassed Wii Play as the best-selling game in US history. Activision has yet to release any current US numbers for their title, but as of October 2010 Wii Play had sold about 13 million copies. One can safely assume that Black Ops has broken that mark based upon Frazier’s statement.
That is yet another impressive accomplishment attributed to Black Ops. Back in November of last year the game sold 5.6 million copies in one day, making it the most successful entertainment launch of all time.
Activision is surely excited about Black Ops‘ record-breaking sales in the wake of the Infinity Ward scandal and the ongoing legal disputes stemming from that. Time will soon tell whether Modern Warfare 3 (under Sledgehammer Games) can continue the franchise’s success.
