Sony has started a promotion where you’ll be given a free Sixaxis controller, a $50 value, if you purchase a PlayStation 3 console. Retailers such as Circuit City have been vamping this promotion during this past Memorial Day weekend.
At first glance, it seems pretty obvious why Sony is going this route — the PS3 is struggling. Last month, Sony sold 50,000 less PS3 units than the month before in March. Yikes, that’s one heck of a drop.
But is this promotion warranted? While you can’t go wrong with an extra controller, wouldn’t it be more sensible to include, say, a game with the PS3? This may be a better marketing move for Sony to better advertise the benefits and strengths of the PS3 console.
It is, after all, a gaming console and what good can you do without game advertising? But on the flipside, there aren’t many PS3 games flowing into the market anyway, so perhaps that’s why games haven’t been bundled with the PS3.
An extra controller for buying a PS3? I’ll take a freebie game instead, any day of the week.
