In the ongoing war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, Microsoft just can’t make up their mind. Microsoft has recently announced that they’re prepared to make an external drive for which ever format becomes more popular. GamerNode brought you news about the Xbox 360 external HD-DVD drive last week, but if the Blu-ray format gains more popularity then Microsoft will start producing external Blu-ray drives. It’s easy for Microsoft to make this switch since they’re simply using external drives. Sony, on the other hand, is at a disadvantage since the Playstation 3 will have a built-in Blu-ray drive which is murder for the console if the format doesn’t catch on. And it’s not like we haven’t seen different types of Sony proprietary media in the past that never became popular. The odd thing here is that Microsoft would even consider using Blu-ray. Surely going the route of the most popular media format would be ideal, but Sony and Microsoft have been fighting hard against each other’s Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats. Microsoft switching over to Blu-ray technology is like throwing in the towel to Sony. Time will tell which format prevails in this revamp of the Beta-Max – VHS battle.
