Blizzard made a bold move against hackers, exploiters, gold farmers and other abusive players by banning 5,400 WoW accounts, and suspending over 10,000, earlier this week. Most of the users banned or suspended were supposedly punished for abusing game mechanics, using automated programs, “gold farming," or violating the game,s terms of use. Blizzard commented on the recent action on their Internet forums, stating that the actions of these abusive players had devalued the overall game experience. This is only the beginning in continuing action against cheaters and exploiters in the game. Game developers have recently taken a more serious stance against cheaters, so hopefully this trend will spill over into other games as well.
