The NPD Group reported today that Activision claimed the #1 U.S console and handheld video game publisher spot for the month of October. The company increased its U.S. market share to 28.7%, which is a new record for the game publisher.
The release of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock largely contributed to Activision’s success; the game earned over $115 million during its first week of sales.
For the month of October, Guitar Hero III was the #1 U.S. best-selling Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii video game. To date, the entire Guitar Hero series sold over 8 million copies worldwide.
Robert Kotick, chairman and CEO of Activision, said, "The Guitar Hero franchise has only scratched the surface of its potential since it was previously only available for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment systems and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.
Despite having significantly increased our production capabilities for the holiday, there is still a high likelihood that we will not be able to meet demand for this game on every platform."
