Yamaoka says, "Wii user isn't a hardcore user."

wiicasualI better put my battle armor on because it's time for our weekly segment titled "Time to go ape over one quote from a major game developer employee!" This week's segment involves Akira Yamaoka, chief composer for Konami, taking a brief jab at the Nintendo Wii when talking about Silent Hill V on Game | Life.

The outrage stemmed from this quote, "No plans. The Wii user isn't a hardcore user." Trust me, if there's one battle you don't want to wade through, it's calling the entire Wii crowd a bunch of casual gamers. There are the hardcore gamers who own Wiis. Also there are "hardcore" games available for the Wii but I think these types of titles will be only sprinkled onto the gaming market every so often.

Nonetheless, what do you folks think? For you ones with a Wii, do you think it stinks to be labeled as a casual gamer? Also here's a good clip of Yamaoka talking about if Silent Hill V will head elsewhere, which sparked his comment about the Wii:

WN: What is the future of the Silent Hill series?

AY: We're making Silent Hill 5 for next-gen consoles. Are there any other platforms besides that? [laughter]

WN: There's the Wii.

AY: Ah, the Wii. Wiiiiiiiiii... Silent Hill Wii. Can we do it? Will players like it?

WN: Yeah! There's a lot of potential there, using the remote as a flashlight, or a knife...

AY: Yeah, there's potential.

WN: But no plans.

AY: No plans. The Wii user isn't a hardcore user.

I own a 360, and a Wii.I don't dare think of myself as casual, but thats what I have the 360 for. To get the more gory etched games. If he wants to mark "Wii owners" as "casual" let him do it, but RE:V would be be a major step up in the interaction with your enviroment, via the Wii Remote and num-chuck.Let him do what he wants, the end result will tell the real story.

Hardcore gamers don't feature the Wii as their main gaming console. It's the X-Box that the hardcore gamers reach for.

And again you stand on ground of "hardcore" Zelda isn't "hardcore" to you?I think the ranks of gamers have nothing to do in how far they take a game, hardcore, casual, means nothing when it comes to a truely epic game.....seriously have we surely drawn a line between these two types of gamers? You can be casual and play Halo 3, you can be hardcore and play something like Loco Roco....so whats the big deal I fear that we think to much into it nowdays....

Not... Hardcore? As far as I can tell, the XBox crowd is the most casual one there can be. It's the college frat- boy crowd that never ventures into waters that aren't shooters, fighting games, or the occasional horror title. I don't think the Wii can ever be known as "casual", but it definitely appeals to a whole other audience that likes the casual style while maintaining the hardcore gamer on the side. If you want to make something exclusively for a "hardcore gamer" system, make it for either a beefy PC or the PS3. But given that, your sales won't be too great compared to a full console port world. Hardcore isn't necessarily major sales, which is why you should stay open to a fuller audience. Besides, if gaming was only for the hardcore, the barrier to entrance would be so daunting that no new gamers would ever surface, and gaming would die. Is Akira Yamaoka trying to kill gaming? That's the conclusion I've come to.

I agree with Killer Within to a point, A casual gamer is not as inclined to finish or even own Halo 3 where as the hardcore gamer has a casual attitude to casual games unless it's worth playing still afterward.
I own a 360 and PS3, there is a Wii in the house but it;s own by a 6 year old who plays his PS2 and the 360 more than his Wii. I consider Zelda to be a hardcore game but unfortunately that and Metroid Prime three are the only hardcore games on the Wii(to me that is) Wii sports was fun but I really consider it to be a controller demo. I refuse to believe Nintendo or anyone would consider it a system seller even though I thought it was fun in the begining. Nintendo doesn't seem to care about the hardcore gamer at system launch anymore compared to the casual gamer. Zelda was split with the Gamecube and the Wiimote controls did not make me want to buy it when my Gamecube had been sitting un-played since RE4. The only hardcore games on the Wii are Zelda and Metroid which I think will do good because of the hardcore gamers who happen to own a Wii. All the other games on the Wii are the non Nintendo exclusives which are so-so and then the Wii version of 360 and PS3 games which are also pretty blah. But on the 360 I feel pretty well taken care of ( except for that nasty little business with the 3 red lights) Ninja Gaiden 2, Mass Effect,Bio Shock, Resident Evil 5, Silent Hill 5 and the list goes on and that's not including the surprise games. I hope there's a few good surprise games coming out for the Wii after Smash Bros and Mario Galaxy, because this console is going to the center of a lot of debate over casual and hardcore when the focus should be on whether the games are even worth anyone playing them. And the Wii does not have a lot a those must play games yet.

I agree to an extent with you Hadrian. But I would also include RE4 Wii Edition, which even though it's a port, it's a good one and besides Zelda was a port as well. These three games are yeah, the only really "serious" games for the Wii released right now. But there are many more top games on the way, besides Wii is just almost a year old, remember the same time period of the 360? I think the Wii has done well, and it will do much better within the coming months and years.
As for it being "not hardcore", I think that guy needs to STFU. I agree 100% with Archem on this one, you took the words out of my mouth.
I play games because they're fun, entertaining and engaging. Not so I can "brag" about being a "hardcore gamer" to my classmates. The definition of hardcore gamer has gone awry, a hardcore gamer is a guy/gal who loves to play games that are good. Not because they're "tough", overrated shooters like Halo just because they're cool with the friends at school who know shit about real gaming. The Wii excells at it's task, to broaden the gaming audience i.e. convert more people into gamers and then give something for everyone from the hardcore gamer to the casual gamer, to play on it.

(theres no edit button) The Wii has far more fun games coming for it than the other consoles in my opinion.

In my opinion, there is no hardcore or casual, you're either a gamer or not!

Posted by Hadrian 8 on 10/22/2007 at 06:39PM

I think the reason there's so much focus on casual and hardcore gamers is because Nintendo started this slow rolling snowball effect to get everyone playing games which got scoffed at when people started comparing the NES and SNES library to their current console library whether it was the N64 or the Gamecube which had a few defining games(N64 much more so than the Cube to me) and everyone had those games but the GameCube and Nintendo's portables really got us to where we are now I think. Good thing for Nintendo that they have a true hardcore following which is filled with people who love "honest and fun games with great controls,(I hate bad controls) great graphical representations of the artists ideas conveyed on screen and these are just loosely things I like about Nintendo without bashing other developers and publishers or console makers. Also I don't care too much for the current definition of hardcore gamer either cause in spite of the games I mentioned in my earlier post which are so called hardcore I love PacMan C.E. on X-Box Live Arcade. I remember when hardcore meant that you played games whether they were good or bad. and through it you found something good and enjoyed yourself. And a casual gamer was no less a gamer compared to the hardcore but just didn't blemish his or her collection with purchases that need defending. But yeah you're a gamer or not and right now there are less and less reason for people to not play.

I'm not trying to ape, but you convey my thoughts better than me. I agree with you both!
