40GB PS3 Bombs in Europe

ps3 bomb londonYesterday, reports came in that PlayStation 3 sales were up in the UK by about 178%, which made it look like the 40GB PS3 was a huge success.

However, after looking a little closer at the stats, 90% of the sales came from the soon to be extinct 60GB model that was only 50 Euros more, and came with two games.

Remember the 20GB PS3? That was discontinued, and we were left with the 60GB model -- which is now being replaced with a 40GB model that has less USB ports and worse backwards compatibility.

Sony, is jumping up and down by 20GB really your solution to poor sales? Why not just stick to one number, sell a bigger hard drive separately as an open option to people? Obviously the whole 40GB thing may not be working as intended, as evidenced by the numbers from Europe. Then again, maybe this will all work out in the end. Sony just needs to keep lowering their PS3 specs and sell out of the superior limited stock while supplies last.

What, the 40GB model wil be the new budget model and a new 80GB model will replace the 60GB one, right?

Any of the Euro readers pick up a 40GB model? Or know someone who did?
