E3: Wii Music announced by Nintendo

e308Guitar Hero and Rock Band define what music games are all about. But let’s face it, not everyone has rhythm or an ear for music. To counteract this dismal state of affairs for some, Nintendo has announced the next in music games named Wii Music for, what else, the Wii.

This game will differ quite a bit from the competition. There won’t be the typical rhythm and timing that is so crucial in playing the other music games. In Wii Music there won’t be any timing at all.

The idea behind this game is to allow anyone to jam to music without the worry of trying to be on beat. How this is accomplished is still a mystery but Nintendo is hoping that wannabe musicians will take to this game like ducks to water.

Shigeru Miyamoto said, "This game is one of the titles we started designing around Wii Sports, Wii Play and Wii Fit. We designed Wii Music to allow everyone the joy of performing music."

The game will allow up to four "musicians" to play and offer 50 playable instruments. No, not 50 different music controllers, but 50 virtual instruments. To add to the illusion of being a performing artist, Wii Music will be able to record your performance so you can share it with your friends or just to relive the experience.

Gee, you mean all those years of my music training are for naught? Probably not, but it will be interesting to see how Wii Music scores against the other two heavy hitters in the music game category.
