Welcome to the Saturday Smash-Up, a weekly recap of all of the new and exciting information from the week in Smash Pics of the Day. What am I talking about? Well, here’s a primer: Since the announcement of Super Smash Brothers for Wii U and Super Smash Brothers for 3DS back at E3 2013, project director Masahiro Sakurai has been posting daily updates on SmashBros.com, just as he did with Super Smash Brothers Brawl during its development cycle. The update is just a screenshot from one of the two versions, but Sakurai provides a small description of the screen on the Super Smash Bros Director’s Room Miiverse page. Sometimes we see the announcement of a character (most recently with Diddy Kong on February 21st), other times it’s just a goofy pose. Check back here every week for a week’s worth of Smash updates, Sakurai musings, and Fanelli reaction.
I’m curious to know what’s going on with the character roster here in Smash. As another week passes with no fresh faces newcomer or veteran, and not a single new combatant revealed since the 21st of February, March 2014 looks to be the first calendar month since the initial announcement without a single character reveal. July had Olimar, August had Luigi, September brought Peach and Toon Link, October saw Sonic, November brought Marth, December gave us Rosalina and Zelda, January gave us Dedede and Lucario, and February saw Little Mac and Diddy Kong added. Perhaps Sakurai is waiting until Monday to reveal someone, or maybe he’s holding back so the entire roster isn’t revealed up front…whatever it is, it’s quite curious. Oh well, on to the updates!

Sakurai: “Pic of the day. Never bully Cuccos. Seriously, attacking them is out of the question! This has always been a cardinal rule of The Legend of Zelda series.“
Editor’s Thoughts: Those damn chickens…they haunt my nightmares! I hope they’re a normal item a la Mr. Saturn, not an Assist Trophy. I feel like the Cucco is better suited to be thrown at someone who can’t retaliate lest they want SWARMS OF POULTRY IN THEIR FACES.

Sakurai: “Pic of the day. Here’s a comparison of characters with and without their outlines on the 3DS version. They also give off a different impression in 3D, so customize the look however you like.”
Editor’s Thoughts: Now I understand why the outlines are there in the first place. The characters really pop out, which you can really tell in that picture. I like that Sakurai is giving us the option, but I think it’ll be outlines for me.

Sakurai: “Pic of the day. Here’s a giant attack item, the Ore Club! It’s made of minerals mined on the mountain of the gods. This bulky weapon can even unleash tornadoes.“
Editor’s Thoughts: Ore Club? No, that’s Soul Edge. Sonic holding Soul Edge is a scary thought…maybe he’ll use it to make us all like the 2006 Xbox 360 and PS3 game…and that’s a world of pure terror. Seriously, that’s a massive weapon that looks pretty cool, it should be fun swinging it around.

Sakurai: “Pic of the day. Oh, Uncle Andross. He really isn’t very considerate.“
Editor’s Thoughts: Damn mime face Andross! I was hoping for the Nintendo 64 version of Star Fox’s greatest nemesis to appear in this new game, but I guess the rectangle-spitting polygon mask will have to work. Fitting he appears for the first time in Super Mario Galaxy, though. That’s a nice touch.

Sakurai Pic 1: “Pic of the day. Here’s the Prism Tower stage for the 3DS version! The battle begins on ground level right in front of the tower.“
Sakurai Pic 2: “You’ll have to climb the tower by securing footholds like these moving platforms!“
Sakurai Pic 3: “By the time you reach the top, the sun is already setting. The view from up there is quite a treat.“
Editor’s Thoughts: More Lumiose in your face! Lumiose City makes for a perfect moving stage based in the Pokemon world (much better than friggin’ Poke Floats), and I look forward to beating the crap out of other players on top of the Eiff…uh, Lumiose Tower.
As we inch closer to E3, the number of truly impactful updates has understandably lessened, but I still think we’ll get some big new info between now and then, most likely in a Nintendo Direct. We’ll just have to wait and see what Sakurai wants to show us. Oh, and where’s Yoshi?
That’s all for now, but before we go, it’s time for the Song of the Week! At the end of every week, I’m going to post a Nintendo tune that I’d like to see make it into either version of Smash (especially if My Music returns, WHICH IT SHOULD). I’ll take requests for songs on the GamerNode Twitter page or on my personal one (remember the #SaturdaySmashUp hashtag!), so let’s jam to some sweet music every Saturday.
If the Battlefield brings back original Smash music from previous games like the Brawl Battlefield did, then this song is a shoo-in. It’s the best mix of the main Brawl theme outside of the original, and it’s the only thing that made trying to play Brawl online worth it.
Until next week, Smashers!
