E3 2013: Microsoft ditches MS Points, brings free games to Xbox LIVE

Xbox Live Xbox One

The days of calculating Microsoft’s ludicrous “Points” system into your currency of choice are finally over! At today’s Microsoft E3 press conference, the company announced that it is dropping the MS Points system in favor of using the local currency of Xbox One owners.

Xbox LIVE Gold members will be able to share their Gold perks with family members without sharing accounts, and Gold memberships will carry over from the 360 to One. No word yet on what those perks will be, but free games may factor into the equation.

Following in the footsteps of PlayStation Plus, Microsoft has also announced that Xbox LIVE Gold members will now receive two free games a month with their subscription. The first two games will be Assassin’s Creed II and Halo 3.

There is no info on how long these games will be available, but if Microsoft follows Sony’s lead, they will be attached to players’ accounts until they terminate their subscription.
