The next-generation Xbox will be able to take control over a TV and set-top box as part of a brand-new service, sources close to Microsoft’s Xbox plans have told The Verge. It will work similarly to that of Google TV and require a constant Internet connection for use.
This new service will be performed by taking a cable signal and running it through an HDMI cable. In doing so, the new Xbox will be able to layer its UI and features over an existing TV channel. Microsoft has allegedly formed partnerships with multiple content providers for various cable services regarding this key part of the console; some of which will be rolled out gradually, while basic functionality will be available at launch.
New improvements are also set to arrive for the next-generation Kinect device as the new motion sensor — reportedly set to launch with the console — will be able to detect the eye movements of those watching what is on the TV screen. The detection will work for multiple viewers and can pause whatever is on the screen should a viewer turn his or her head and look away. This new feature is said to be integrated into the next-generation Xbox’s UI and features as part of the aforementioned TV plans.
Originally intended for April, Microsoft now plans to reveal the new Xbox on May 21. The console is also believed to feature an AMD “Jaguar” chip and won’t include backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 titles.
