Journey receives Grammy nomination

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards nominees were announced last night and among them is thatgamecompany’s Journey, which received a nod for “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.”

Austin Wintory, who composed Journey‘s original score, finds himself alongside legends such as John Williams and Howard Shore for their work in film. The five films competing with Journey for the award are “The Adventures of Tintin,” “The Artist,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” and “Hugo.”

Wintory took to Twitter to express his surprise.

“Well I don’t really have words right now…I just got a Grammy nomination for Journey,” he said.

This marks only the second time a video game has been nominated for a Grammy award. Back in 2010 Civilization IV actually took home the gramophone statuette for Christopher Tin’s track “Baba Yetu” in the “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists” category.

We’ll know if Journey follows in Civilization IV‘s footsteps when the 55th Annual Grammy Awards are held on February 10, 2013.

My first experience playing a video game blew me away. The fact that Super Metroid was that game certainly helped. So I like to think Samus put me on the path to video games. Well, I guess my parents buying the SNES had a little something to do with it. Ever since then my passion for video games has grown. When I found that I could put words together into a coherent sentence, videogame journalism was a natural interest. Now I spend a large majority of my time either playing video games or writing about them, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
