Hauppauge, already a household name in video game capture, has recently released the follow-up to the company’s HD PVR game capture device, and has improved upon the previous model with the HD PVR 2: Gaming Edition.
Like the original HD PVR, the HD PVR 2 connects to a user’s game console and computer (Windows PC only) to capture audio and video directly to the PC’s hard drive via bundled software, which also doubles as a video editor for integrated post-production. This time around, though, the HD PVR 2 features HDMI input and output instead of the previous component-only setup. The device can capture up to 1080p30 via HDMI for Xbox 360 and PC, and 1080i60 for PS3 via an included component audio/video dongle (Blu-ray copy protection measures foil the PS3’s HDMI recording capability again!), with no delay or slowdown in the on-screen image, so you can play while you record.
It’s all exported via an H.264 AVCHD encoder to the user’s choice of .M2TS, .TS, or .MP4 file formats. The end results are pretty sweet, and with the option of PC connectivity, a wider range of uses has now opened up for HD PVR 2 users.
