Blizzard’s runaway success continues with the announcement that the latest expansion to the highest grossing MMORPG of all time, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, has sold over 4.7 million units in the month following its release. Not only does this set a record for monthly PC game sales, but it represents almost five million World of Warcraft users still faithfully playing and paying for new content.
During its launch, Cataclysm also set the record for highest day-one PC game sales with 3.3 million units sold. And while these figures seem staggering, it’s important to note that the worldwide subscriber population for WoW has grown to over 12 million.
Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, responded to the success with a big "thank you" to WoW supporters: "We’ve been floored by the community’s response so far, and we’d like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for helping Cataclysm reach this incredible milestone."
