Next week, gamers will return to the dark, twisted, Lovecraftian world of Alan Wake and jump back into the troubled writer’s shoes with Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. To get everyone ready for another tango with surreal alternate reality that Wake has found himself in, Remedy has provided a launch trailer complete with a creepy, “Twilight Zone”-like voice over.
Aside from the voice over, the trailer consists of Alan doing lots of walking and battling against the darkness-consumed Taken with various combinations of flashlight and weaponry. Though the downloadable game is set in the alternate reality of The Dark Place, a short scene of Wake’s friend and agent, Barry, is featured in the trailer. Perhaps this is another subconscious creation of Barry by Wake’s mind like in “The Signal” and “The Writer,” or maybe it’s a scene showing what he and Alice, Alan’s wife, have been up to since the events of the first game.
American Nightmare will have Wake pursuing Mr. Scratch, his evil double, towards the town of Night Springs, which is also the name of the “Twilight Zone” ripoff show featured in the series’ world. In order to finally begin his escape from The Dark Place, Alan must learn the secrets to defeating Mr. Scratch and how to control reality itself, likely through the use of his written word.
Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is set to release on February 22 as part of Xbox LIVE Arcade’s House Party. The game is rated T for Teen and will run players 1200 Microsoft Points.
