THQ Is Growing Up, Leaving Kids’ Game Business

THQ is growing up. According to a statement released today, the publisher has announced that it is leaving the kids’ and licensed game businesses, instead trying to focus on its “core” franchises.

As THQ CEO Brian Farrell puts it:

“THQ will be a more streamlined organization focused only on our strongest franchises.”

The “key franchises” the company lists are UFC, Darksiders, Company of Heroes, inSane, Saints Row, Warhammer 40,000, and the yet-unknown game headed by former Assassin’s Creed Creative Director Patrice Désilets.

While the focus on more core gaming is a welcome change, there is a glaring omission from that list of “key franchises”: WWE. Could there be trouble in paradise for WWE and THQ?

Only time will tell, but for now it seems like THQ is getting serious about the franchises that has put the publisher where it is. Perhaps it has something to do with the frightening financial news from a couple of weeks ago, cancelling its 2014 lineup and all that, but for now optimism is warranted.

We’ll bring you more on this story, specifically the WWE situation, as it develops.
