New reports indicate that Nintendo’s handheld broke Japan’s monthly console sales record, moving nearly 1.5 million units.
During the December tracking period, November 28 to December 25, Nintendo sold a total of 1,492,931 3DS systems. The Japanese publisher that tracked sales of the system, Enterbrain, has been at it since 1997, but this is the best performance of any console they’ve tracked.
Nintendo can also boast that the 3DS has been the best-selling console in Japan for seven months straight, with the PlayStation Vita lagging behind with just over 400,000 units sold.
However, the Vita was only on the market for eight days in Japan when the December tracking period ended. Next month’s reports should more accurately depict how much competition Vita will be for Nintendo’s handheld.
