What the Game Developers Conference 2011 has lacked in surprises it’s made up for in substance – this new two-and-a-half minute gameplay clip from Battlefield 3 standing as a prime example. From the looks of it, modern shooters are about to see some serious change.
Battlefield 3 takes place in the future, 2014, so perhaps "modern" isn’t exactly an accurate description. However, this game appears to be more accurate in almost every other aspect to the current soldier’s experience in the Middle East (Iraq/Iran border in this case) as it takes time out for briefings, cold entries, and down time rather than constantly pounding the player with intense shooter action. But that’s there too.
Visually, Battlefield 3 impresses with some incredibly realistic lighting effects and sets. Perhaps most impressive, though, are the character animations (especially the running soldiers) which look to be drawn straight from "Black Hawk Down".
More footage is set to be unleashed on March 16, but until then check out the eerily lifelike trailer below.
