The revolutionary controller for Nintendo,s next-gen console may run into a bit of a problem come launch, as rumors are flying that the aiming sensor on the remote portion of the controller could malfunction if used in a room with halogen lighting. At several stores where the Wii has been showcased, the numerous halogen lights caused difficulties, sources report.
While sources are very sketchy about the issue, it is definitely plausible. The sensor on the console acts a transmitter bar with infra-red LEDs to provide a point of reference for the CCD (charge coupled device) camera in the end of the controller. The Wii controller becomes confused when the halogen bulbs cross into the same band of IR.
If true, this will definitely be a problem for gamers with halogen bulbs in front of their televisions, especially since the controller is waved about while in use. There has been no official word from Nintendo about the potential problem. Until then, gamers should expect to have to turn the lights off when playing with their Wii-something many gamers do anyway.
