The Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console feature has been used as a means for customers to download old school classics from Nintendo game machines ranging from the first NES to the N64. However, speculation has surfaced as to the true purpose of the VC–rumors saying that the VC platform might be used in the future as a means to download not only classic games from the Nintendo library, but new, original game content as well.
The rumors seem to have been proven true. Nintendo has issued a statement to CVG stating: "Nintendo has developed a programming system that will allow small independent developers to make games for Wii download service. We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop."
The prospect of independent developers being able to sell games on the WiiConnect24 online service is certainly a move that will help to open the doors for new gaming ideas–a process which is often difficult for the larger game companies to accomplish because of the expense and tremendous overhead required to develop new games. The step by Nintendo may also foster the start of what most game publishers are moving towards: total digital distribution of games.
