Dell has decided that while making home computers is the bread and butter of its business, there is a segment of the community that it doesn’t quite reach–hardcore gamers. Steps are being taken to cater to this crowd by unleashing a new line of gaming PCs that will start with an entry level cost of $6,667, and a fully equipped model for a whopping $10,000. The new computers were first seen and unveiled in Europe.
The new computers, designated as the XPS 710 H2C series, will definitely not have a problem with overheating, thanks to water cooled CPUs and thermo-electric ceramic cooling technology–the same technology used in the space shuttle to cool onboard electronic components.
The heart of the gaming system is the Intel Core Extreme quad-core QX6700, overclocked from 2.66GHz to 3.2GHz. The XPS 710 H2C will use the DirectX 10 Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX graphics card, two 160GB 10,000rpm hard drives, and 4GB of RAM.
It’s difficult to predict if such an expensive machine will appeal to PC gamers, as most hardcore PC enthusiasts resort to the tired and true method of building their own gaming rigs–at substantial savings–while maintaining quality control and personal customization of features. But if Dell is squarely aiming its new high-end computers at hardcore gamers who have large discretionary incomes, the machines may very well find a niche market with this demographic.
