EA Extends LotR Rights to 2008; New Game Planned

Variety reports that Electronic Arts has signed a new deal with New Line and Tolkien Enterprises to continue publishing Lord of the Rings video games through 2008. The article also revealed EA is currently working on a brand-new LotR game, despite a previous title, LotR: The White Council, being put on hold. No other details about the new game have been revealed.

EA’s last signed deal with New Line was in 2004 and allowed literary rights from Tolkien Enterprises to be incorporated into games. The two latest games in the LotR universe were The Battle for Middle-Earth II in 2006 for PC and Xbox 360 and its expansion pack The Rise of the Witch-King later that year for the same platforms.
