Stanford University’s folding@home project is more successful than project lead Vijay Pande could have imagined.
In the program’s first few weeks, folding@home had 40,000 PS3s participating in the distributed computing assignments. Now, just a scant month later, there are now over 250,000 PS3s chugging away to help humanity.
Just how much power is there in a quarter of a million PS3s working together? According to Pande, it’s a lot. "Thanks to PS3, we have performed simulations in the first few weeks that would normally take us more than a year to calculate. We are now gearing up for new simulations that will continue our current studies of Alzheimer’s and other diseases."
