Continuing the massive amounts of new game announcements that have flooded the newwires recently, Square Enix held a press event yesterday unveiling several upcoming games. First up, they announced a brand-new RPG titled The Last Remnant. The game will be a new IP and is in development for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It’ll also use the Unreal Engine 3, which they licensed back in January. Square Enix is planning a dual launch of the title in North American and Japan. The title will encompass gameplay involving a vast number of characters, settings and strategies. The battle system will be through quick, timed events. There’s currently no release date.
Next up are three new games for the Star Ocean franchise. First is the brand-new entry Star Ocean 4, and series developer Tri-Ace will be returning to develop the game. The last two new games, Star Ocean: The Fire Departure and Star Ocean: The Second Evolution, will be for the PSP and they’ll be remakes of the first two games in the series. No other information about the three games has been announced yet.
Thirdly, Square Enix announced a follow-up to their Nintendo DS title Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales, which will be released for the Nintendo Wii. While it won’t be a full-blown sequel, it’ll serve as a new entry in the Chocobo Dungeon series. No other information about the game has been released.
During the event, Final Fantasy executive producer Akitoski Kawazu mentioned some updates for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. Kawazu showed a trailer and announced the Japan release date of August 23rd. Afterwards, Toshiyuki Itahana, director of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, showcased a trailer for the Wii edition of the game. He also reiterated saying the game will be more like an action/adventure title.
Lastly, and probably the most confusing game title of the year, Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System will be released in Japan this August for the PS2. This game is the relocalized version of the English version of Final Fantasy XII and is intended for the Japanese audience. Among the new things added are an English audio track, 16:9 support and a new job system.
